The TOEFL® test

The TOEFL® test (TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE™) is a reliable and accurate measure of a student’s English skills.  An internationally accepted standard of English proficiency, it is a required certification by more than 4500 colleges and universities worldwide. As opposed to the TOEIC® test that measures the use of English in a business context, the TOEFL® test has an academic focus.

Who uses the TOEFL® test?

  • Admissions officers, deans, and similar decision makers
  • Directors of scholarship agencies
  • Administrators of licensing and certification agencies
  • Administrators of government agencies
  • Individuals who plan to study in an English-medium college or university

Benefits of the TOEFL® test:

  • Widely available and easily accessible
  • Regarded as the international standard and industry leader
  • The test is administered under secure conditions and is highly reliable; hence, scores can be used confidently to make high-stake decisions

The new TOEFL iBT test

The new TOEFL® iBT (Internet Based Testing) is ETS’ next generation TOEFL test, and incorporates an integrated-skills approach to simulate real-life academic environments. The TOEFL iBT test:

  • Measures four skills and combines them in integrated tasks: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • Focuses on how well you use English, not just what you know about it.
  • Uses integrated tasks that are more reflective of what we do with language in the real world, and results in a better measure of ability to participate successfully in an academic environment.

Benefits of the new test:

  • It is administered to candidates via the Internet at official ETS test centres. With Internet-based testing, ETS can capture speech and score responses in a secure and standardised manner.
  • Online registration and online score reporting makes it easier for candidates to register for the test, as well as receive their results.
  • Test takers will be able to view scores online 15 business days after the test, as well as receive a copy of their score report by mail from ETS.
  • Skill scores provide institutions with more flexibility than ever before to customise their score requirements. Each programme can decide what score profile is important based on their particular needs.
